International Scientific Societies and Associations
The American Association for the Advancement of Science — "Triple A-S" (AAAS), is an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science around the world by serving as an educator, leader, spokesperson and professional association. In addition to organizing membership activities, AAAS publishes the journal Science, as well as many scientific newsletters, books and reports, and spearheads programs that raise the bar of understanding for science worldwide.
The New York Academy of Sciences — Since 1817, the New York Academy of Sciences has been bringing together scientists of different disciplines from around the world. Their purpose is to advance the understanding of science, technology, and medicine, and to stimulate new ways to think about how their research is applied in society and the world.
International Council for Science — In order to strengthen international science for the benefit of society, ICSU mobilizes the knowledge and resources of the international science community to:
* Identify and address major issues of importance to science and society.
* Facilitate interaction amongst scientists across all disciplines and from all countries.
* Promote the participation of all scientists—regardless of race, citizenship, language, political stance, or gender—in the international scientific endeavour.
* Provide independent, authoritative advice to stimulate constructive dialogue between the scientific community and governments, civil society, and the private sector.
The Academia Europaea — A European, non-governmental association acting as an Academy. Its members are scientists and scholars who collectively aim to promote learning, education and research.
The Royal Society of London — The national academy of science of the UK and the Commonwealth, is at the cutting edge of scientific progress. The Society supports many top young scientists, engineers and technologists, influences science policy, debates scientific issues with the public and much more. They are an independent, charitable body which derives their authoritative status from over 1400 Fellows and Foreign Members.
The World Academy of Art and Science — Was established in 1960 as a non-official network of individual Fellows from diverse cultures, nationalities, and intellectual disciplines, "chosen for eminence in art, the natural and social sciences, and the humanities. Its activities focus on "the social consequences and policy implications of knowledge."
American Chemical Society — Is a congressionally chartered independent membership organization which represents professionals at all degree levels and in all fields of chemistry and sciences that involve chemistry.
Sigma Xi — Was founded in 1886 to honor excellence in scientific investigation and encourage a sense of companionship and cooperation among researchers in all fields of science and engineering. The Greek letters "sigma" and "xi" form the acronym of the Society's motto, "Spoudon Xynones," which translates as "Companions in Zealous Research."
The European Academy of Sciences and Arts — The European Academy of Sciences and Arts was founded in 1990. The Academy focuses on interdisciplinary discussion across specialist areas, ideologies and scientific cultures as well as promoting transnational dialog and visionary developments of new scientific knowledge and academic thinking.
The European Physical Society — Created in 1968, the EPS provides an international forum to discuss science and policy issues of interest to its members. It represents over 100,000 members and physicists through its 41 national member societies. It also provides a forum for over 2500 individual members. Applied research in industry, and academic and other research institutes are also present as associate members.
The International Society for Optics and Photonics — Founded in 1955 to advance light-based technologies. Serving more than 188,000 constituents from 138 countries, the Society advances emerging technologies through interdisciplinary information exchange, continuing education, publications, patent precedent, and career and
professional growth.
The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology — Advances health and welfare by promoting progress and education in biological and biomedical sciences through service to its member societies and collaborative advocacy.
