Ukraine has entered the state of deep controversy. On one side, a president of independent Ukraine is for the first time staunchly pushing through the most difficult reforms. On the other side, the warning bells of danger toll about an authoritarian repressive regime being firmly entrenched by the same president. 

Footage of the debris-filled water sweeping across fields and through houses has since been broadcast all over the world. But as well as providing an idea of how it felt to experience the tragedy first-hand, experts say the images can now be used to better understand the characteristics of tsunamis and help save lives in the future. 

The myths that Ukraine lives by today block its social, economic and political development, as they formulate the country's problems incorrectly and give rise to the wrong objectives. Their presence makes it impossible to deal with Ukraine's very real problems, making it vitally important for the country that these myths be dispelled.

The proposed bill on how to deal with the country’s past wishes to sanitize the historical record for political purposes. Bence Retvari, the parliamentary secretary of state at Hungary’s Ministry of Justice, announced that it is unethical for a democratic state to preserve in its public archives the “immoral documents of an immoral regime.”

Ukraine's state security service on Thursday opened a criminal probe against a museum director on suspicion of preparing to divulge secrets in what appeared to be a toughening of policy on declassifying historical documents. Zabily -- whose museum is dedicated to the tens of thousands who died in western Ukraine under Soviet and Nazi rule -- had illegally gathered material containing state secrets, and intended to pass this on to other people, an SBU statement said.

Ukraine’s agreement to relinquish its entire stockpile of highly enriched uranium gave President Barack Obama the first concrete result for a summit he convened on securing the world’s atomic material. Under the terms of the accord, Ukraine will dispose of roughly 90 kilograms of uranium and convert nuclear research reactors to use lower grade fuel.
