25.04.2011 25 years after nuclear crisis, the sense of betrayal lingers

KIEV - After Chernobyl, there was no turning back. The Soviet Union had already set out on its long road to collapse, but 25 years ago on Tuesday, April 26, 1986, the explosion at reactor No. 4 marked the moment when control at the top, and faith at the bottom, began to unravel.

Even today, Ukrainians, who achieved independence five years after the disaster, remember the fear of radiation and of the unknown - but more pointedly, they remember their sense of betrayal.

Now they hear distant echoes of Chernobyl as Japan struggles, not always transparently, to deal with the Fukushima crisis. But the contrast with the Soviet response is stark.

24.12.2008 New Faculty Club organized in Cherkasy
Faculty Clubs at Ukrainian institutions of higher learning are a new idea. So far, the concept of a “House of scientists” was realized since Soviet times to fulfill the need for scientists to socialize and to popularize science in the society.

The first meetings of the Cherkasy Scientific Club (CSC) which was recently founded at the Bohdan Khmelnytsky National University in Cherkasy took place on December 23, 2008.

The CSC was founded by a group of researchers, who feel a “deficit of oxygen” in the scientific atmosphere of Cherkasy, who aspire to have productive informal communication for scientists who feel a responsibility for the future of their country, city and local area.

11.12.2008 The Making of Modern Ukraine
On December 2, 2008, Ukrainian Scientific Club coordinated a discussion panel titled “National Interests: Politics and Economics”.

Interestingly enough, proposal to discuss Friedrich List’s ideas about national states and economics and to invite Dr.Roman Szporluk of Harvard University to the round table came from the businessman of Dnipropetrovsk, director of the Institute of social researches Volodymyr Panchenko. This fact is very symptomatic for the current developments in Ukraine which still struggle to find its identity and to build sustainable policies in political and economic fields. Roman Szporluk is a major world expert on modern Ukrainian history, Ukrainian-Polish and Ukrainian-Russian relations, nationalism and Marxism in Central and Eastern Europe.
